The parent company of PartyPoker, Bwin.party, has submitted a formal application to provide online poker to Nevada residents, joining a list of applicants that now numbers two dozen.
Just a few months ago, Bwin.party announced a partnership agreement with Las Vegas-based casino companies MGM Resorts International and Boyd Gaming to operate poker sites in the U.S. following the enactment of regulations. Nevada’s legislation requires service providers such as Bwin.party who are not based in Nevada to join forces with established brick-and-mortar casino companies located in the Silver State.
PartyPoker had a foothold as the world’s top poker room prior to the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006. The site elected to withdraw its services from the U.S. market following the vaguely worded UIGEA legislation that saw other sites such as PokerStars, Full Tilt and Absolute Poker flout the law and remain as U.S. internet poker providers, thereby gaining the player traffic and revenue ceded by PartyPoker’s exit. Almost five years later in 2011, the ramifications of remaining in the U.S. market were felt by the aforementioned poker sites that seemingly ignored the UIGEA and were hit with the Black Friday indictments that shook the entire online poker industry, eventually forcing the closure of Full Tilt, with Absolute Poker currently rumored to be seeking asset liquidation.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board is presently reviewing online poker applications received. It is not known at this time how many applicants the board will actually approve. However, Bwin.party is thought to have an excellent chance of approval based on its longstanding success in the online poker industry, its solid partners with a favorable presence in Nevada, as well as its exit from the U.S. marketplace in conforming with UIGEA regulations in 2006.
Bwin.party joins a list of other major players wishing to provide online poker in Nevada, including 888 Holdings, IGT, Boss Media, and Shuffle Master, who recently announced an agreement to purchase the Ongame Network from Bwin.party just a few days ago.
